10 Popular Foot Problems You Need to Know

Our feet do a lot of work during our lifetime. Even though we don't think about them often, they keep us standing and support our entire bodies. As we move, our bodies age or go through pregnancy, our feet are affected. Sometimes feet problems can arise, and untreated, they can cause pain. Anyone can suffer from a foot-related problem. The primary cause of foot pain is injury, overuse, or conditions that cause inflammation involving any bones, ligaments, or tendons in the foot. Your chances of developing foot pain are higher if you have many risk factors. Foot pain is also more common in children, older adults, pregnant women, or women who wear high heels. In American alone, 87% of people have foot problems at some point in their life. At Boger's Shoes, foot problems are our business, and we want to help your feet feel less pain. Here are 10-foot problems you should be aware of, and we know some shoes that can help.

What are 10 Common Foot Problems

Foot pain often develops from improper foot function. Several foot problems affect the heel, toes, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and joints of the foot. Symptoms of foot problems can look similar to other medical conditions, so it is best to always see your healthcare provider for a diagnosis before trying to solve it yourself or buy shoes.

Athletes are susceptible to a variety of foot problems.

Lateral Foot Pain

Lateral foot pain is pain that can develop on the outer side of the foot. The outer side of the foot is where the pinky toe is. Lateral foot pain is commonly associated with the foot problem cuboid syndrome, injury to the side of the foot, or a sprained ankle. Repetitive activities like running and jumping can also cause lateral foot pain. You'll find that runners, ballet dancers, and athletes often suffer from lateral foot pain. Signs of lateral foot pain can include pain that radiates from the ankle to the toes.

Cuboid Syndrome

Cuboid syndrome is a medical condition caused by the cuboid bone coming out of alignment. There are seven tarsal bones in the foot, and the cuboid bone is one of them. It can be found on the pink toe side and forms the center of the lateral column of the foot. Its name comes from its cubical shape. When the cuboid bones shift out of alignment with the adjacent calcaneus bones, it can cause cuboid syndrome.

Calluses

Calluses are another common foot problem. They are rarely painful, tend to form on pressure spots and vary in size and shape. Often calluses are bigger than corns. Many people consider corns and calluses to be the same, but they are different. A Callus is a rough and thickened area of skin that forms from repeat irritation and pressure. They can develop on the palms, the heels, the balls of the feet, or the soles of the feet.

Corns

As noted above, corns are very similar to calluses. While calluses cover larger areas of skin, soft or hard corns are usually much smaller and dig deeper into the skin than a callus. Because of their hard center covered by swollen skin, a hard corn can be painful when pressed. Hard corns will form on the top of the toe or along the edge of the small toe, and a soft corn can form between the toes. Calluses and corn can both be caused by wearing high heels, not wearing socks, or shoes that are the wrong size.

Blisters

Another common foot problem is a blister. Blisters, like calluses and corns, can form from skin irritation. Sunburns, scalds, or contact with chemicals can also cause blisters to develop. Blisters are small pockets of fluid where the upper layers of skin are damaged. The whole body is susceptible to blisters, but they are most common on the hands and feet. If a blister becomes filled with blood or pus, it's probably inflamed or infected.

Bunions

Our next foot problem is the bunion. Bunions are a bony bump that develops on the joint at the base of the big toe. Bunionettes, smaller bunions, take shape on the joint of your little toe. When the bones in the front of your foot move out of place, a bunion can form. Tight and narrow shoes may cause bunions, and they can also create them. The shape of your foot, a foot deformity, or one of several medical conditions can also lead to bunions. For instance, people with arthritis will often end up with bunions.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a more difficult foot condition to pinpoint. Arthritis refers to the inflammation or swelling of one or more joints. There are over 100 conditions that affect the joint, the joint tissues, and other connective tissues. Depending on the type of arthritis, different symptoms will appear. Usually, arthritis includes joint pain and stiffness.

The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Other arthritis' or related disorders are gout, lupus, scleroderma, and many more.

Diabetic Neuropathy

We have a lot of customers who deal with diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage that can occur if you have diabetes. The high blood sugar (glucose) caused by diabetes can injure nerves throughout the body. The legs and feet are often the most damaged from diabetic neuropathy. The four main types of diabetic neuropathy are peripheral, autonomic, proximal, and mononeuropathy. Your symptoms depend on the types you have and the nerves that are affected.

Heel spur

Another type of foot problem that affects the bones is the heel spur. A heel spur happens when a calcium deposit causes a bony protrusion on the bottom of the heel bone. Usually, it takes many months for the calcium to build up and create a heel spur. They can occur by repeated tearing of the membrane that covers the heel bone, stretching of the plantar fascia and foot muscles, and ligament strain.

Plantar Fasciitis

Heel spurs are frequently associated with plantar fasciitis. When the bands of fibrous connective tissue (Plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the ball of the foot become inflamed, it is called plantar fasciitis. Most of the time, plantar fasciitis develops without a particular reason. There are factors, like new increased activity, obesity, flat feet, or repetitive high-impact activity, that can make you more likely to develop the condition. Common plantar fasciitis symptoms are pain on the foot bottom near the heel, pain after getting out of bed, or a large amount of pain after exercise or activity.

Any one of these foot problems can add unwanted pain to your daily activities. A doctor should always diagnose any foot problems you're having. Once you know your foot pain, the right shoe can help relieve part of the symptoms.
